Faith is a Journey
Randall Nelsen — Faith Is a Journey
I'm Randall Nelsen—an author, songwriter, preacher, and independent Christian creator.
I work across fiction, music, art, Scripture, worldbuilding, and interactive storytelling. My projects include Living Parables, Prodigal's Journey, Jonah Quest, Shadows in Jericho, and Shadow in the Son.
A lot of what I create is connected, although it may not look that way at first.
The closest analogy I have is a Matryoshka doll. Each piece is something in itself, but it's also part of something larger. Open it and there's another piece inside. Sometimes it's more like peeling back layers, or looking into a mirror that's reflecting another mirror behind you.
That's how I like to tell stories.
A song can belong to a fictional character and still be something you can actually listen to. A painting can exist inside a story and outside of it. A real place or historical event might find its way into a fictional object or artifact. A character, place, object, or seemingly insignificant detail can belong completely to one story and still have roots somewhere else.
Some connections are obvious. Others are buried pretty deep. Sometimes what looks fictional has something real underneath it, and every once in a while, the line between fiction and reality gets a little blurry.
I use typology, especially biblical typology, throughout much of my work. An image, object, person, place, or event can point beyond itself and take on another layer of meaning. Sometimes the connection is right there on the surface. Sometimes you have to look a little closer.
I don't want to explain every connection. I'd rather leave something for you to discover.
I want to tell good stories that can stand on their own, but still have another layer waiting underneath.

Faith is a journey.
And at the center of everything I create:
God redeems.
Light returns.
Jesus is Lord.
