You Gave Me Breath — One Step Closer to Songs of the Deep
With “You Gave Me Breath,” we leaned into a slower, more reflective pocket. It’s soulful, with some gospel underneath it and a little R&B in the phrasing. We gave this one room to breathe and let the words carry a lot of it.
We don’t really have one style, and I think that’s becoming part of who we are. We’re trying to break out of the idea that Christian music has to have one certain sound. Not just to be different—we just don’t believe in cookie-cutter Christianity. There are a lot of ways to worship through music, honor God, and stay true to His Word.
Kayla has inspired us quite a bit too. She’s been doing this longer than we have, and playing with her at the Fox and getting her feedback has definitely rubbed off on us. Shadow in the Son has been an inspiration too.
Mara helped shape this one and ended up painting something from the idea behind the song. The music and paintings keep finding their way into each other, which has been pretty cool to watch happen.
